ACID MINE DRAINAGE (AMD) ON THE WITWATERSRAND
THE PAST, THE PRESENT AND THE FUTURE
Tuesday 04 October 2016
14h30 to 17h00
Presented by ANDREW TANNER
ANDREW TANNER, a Professional Engineer who has been intimately involved with the feasibility study for the development of a long term solution for AMD on the Witwatersrand, will give some of the history, dispel some of the myths, present the facts, talk about the challenges and the process of developing a solution, discuss the present situation and describe what lies ahead.
When the Witwatersrand mines, that were once the world’s greatest source of gold, stopped production, pumping from the underground workings also stopped. The underground voids have since been steadily filling with water. This water interacts with the minerals in the rock formations to form Acid Mine Drainage (AMD), also known internationally as Acid Rock Drainage (ARD). In the case of the Western Basin, the AMD gradually reached the surface and started to drain out (decant) into surface streams in 2002. The acidic and polluted, very saline, water in the voids of the Central and Eastern Basins was rising steadily until pumping and neutralisation of the water from the voids of the Central Basin started in 2014 and from the Eastern Basin very recently
Come and learn about this innovative approach to addressing the most critical of SADC’s needs – access to clean water!
